Our favorite blogs of 2024 — interior design to transform your mood

Does entering your home or your favorite room positively transform your mood when you enter it? That desire seemed to be prevalent as we looked back over the year to examine our most popular blog posts. Three of the four most read were on Sensory Design, Biophilic Design, and using wallpaper to give a bathroom a spa-like finish.

Biophilic Design prioritizes the integration of nature and natural elements into our living and working spaces.

An Appreciation for Nature

Biophilic Design, where nature and natural elements take center stage in our homes and workplaces, is the leading trend we’ve seen at the recent High Point N.C. Home Furnishings Markets. The emphasis on Biophilic is based on the growing appreciation for nature and its calming influence on our lives.

People are seeking more comfort and coziness at home in the form of painted nooks, moody wallpaper, warm wood tones, and rich, colorful upholstery. The key to this trend is the focus on calm, comfort, and connection.

Read our 2024 blog on Biophilic Design.

Creating a sensory haven at home is about tailoring the space to your preferences and needs.

Sensory Design Benefits Everyone

Biophilic fits under the umbrella term Sensory Design. Some will think that Sensory Design is only or primarily meant to be for individuals with special sensitivities such as those with autism spectrum disorders or Misophonia, a chronic condition that causes people to have intense emotional reactions to specific sound.

Sensory Design, however, can benefit everyone. The over-arching idea is to create a sanctuary for escape for this fast-paced world. “Whether you’re looking to unwind after a long day or to improve your mental well-being, transforming your living space into a sensory haven can offer much-needed solace. This approach, rooted in multi-sensory design, utilizes elements that stimulate the senses to enhance relaxation, reduce anxiety, and promote mindfulness,” said High Point University Assistant Professor of Interior Design Lisa Williams.

Wallpaper is still a popular alternative to paint, especially in bathrooms.

We all need a spa-like bathroom

Having a spa-like bathroom is certainly a delightful space to transform your mood. Some people might think wallpaper is outdated, but the truth is that it’s still very popular as an alternative to paint, especially for giving a bathroom a spa-like finish.

Wallpaper comes in multiple types. Each has pros and cons that make it either an excellent or terrible choice for a bathroom. There is printed, mylar, grasscloth, bamboo, and vinyl. You can choose from many colors or combinations.

Style your coffee table to reflect your personality and enhance the ambiance of your living space.Winning design project by Michelle Jett.

Select a coffee table that suits your needs

The décor on your surfaces can also affect your mood. A surface can look chaotic, which can be disturbing; or stylish, which can settle you. Think about coffee tables. No, they are not passé. Looking through this year’s room makeover entries in our International Dream Room competition judged by interior design journalists clearly indicates that coffee tables are certainly in vogue.

The basic lesson for styling a coffee table involves using varied heights, varied materials, layering items, and incorporating nature. Sometimes the table itself is a piece of art and too much styling on the surface would take away from the artistry of the furnishing itself. Upholstered pieces can double for ottoman-type use and table-type use. It takes only a tray to display an accessory or two or serve up some drinks. Of course, there also are multifunction coffee tables.

We hope you enjoyed the favorite blogs of 2024. Michelle Jett can help you create your own special sanctuary or help you with your room design in a way that makes your room more beautiful and reflective of your personality and lifestyle.

Bringing Clients the Freshest in Home Furnishings

A major benefit we bring to clients is our in-depth, direct relationship with more than 125 leading home furnishings manufacturers and suppliers. They are part of our collection of luxury furniture, custom window treatments, wall and floor coverings, accessories, and lighting.

One of the ways we strengthen these supplier relationships is our annual visit to the October High Point NC International Home Furnishings Market. Roughly 100 of our Decorating Den Interiors owners join Michelle looking at and sitting on high quality and distinctive home furnishings from vendors such as Caracole, Cyan, Jessica Charles and so many more top brands.

What this means to our clients is that MICHELLE JETT is part of a network of over 250 interior design businesses throughout North America. Our collective franchises represent a major source of revenue for our suppliers and when we tour the Market and enter one of the High Point showrooms, we make a real impact. The special attention we receive benefits you! We get details about what makes the products we bring to clients so special.

Staying Fresh

The High Point Market is the largest home furnishings industry trade show in the world, with over 11 million square feet and about 2000 exhibitors throughout about 180 buildings. It is daunting for small independent designers. Again, though, our clients benefit from a major advantage we have.

The Director of Design and Head of Merchandising, Sr. Vice President David Haseley, and his team, work directly with senior executives of our supplier firms, often the CEO, to ensure that our time at the Market is most effective. We are very efficiently shown the newest products in home furnishings, the newest in textiles, the newest in construction, the newest in styles, the newest in sustainability, the newest in color trends, and anything else that’s new in interior decor.

Craftsmanship

We also visit manufacturing plants to see first-hand the craftsmanship, attention to detail, and overall quality that is a feature of the products we offer to clients. And we get to meet employees so they can know we are a major customer.

Even those of us who can’t attend Market still get the benefit. Our designers are each part of geographic region that meets frequently for camaraderie, continuing education and updates from our area supplier representatives. The first regional meeting after Market will involve in-depth discussion of what was fresh.

Leadership

Our clients even help us strengthen our supplier relationships by enabling us to serve as a resource for our suppliers. Because we do such a wide range of design projects company-wide, we are often asked to participate in educational panel discussions at home furnishings showrooms at High Point.

This year, for example, Universal Furniture invited colleagues Jennifer Ward-Woods and her sister Barbara Elliott, of Stone Mountain, Ga., along with Laura Outland and Lynne Lawson, of Columbia, Md. to discuss “Designing for Different Generations.” Gabby Luxury Furniture leaned on Krista Shugars, of the Baltimore area, to be a panelist discussing “Luxury is an Attitude: Building Insane Revenue with Everyday Clients.”

All five of these design pros have achieved Designer of the Year status as judged by interior design journalists evaluating room makeovers in our annual International Dream Room competition.

Michelle got to meet internationally known designers Barclay Buteraand Libby Langdon

It’s all about giving clients an edge in considering options for a new room design. We want our clients to be confident that they are getting solid knowledge from us on what is new, what the quality is like, and what is fresh and new.

Sensory Design

“In today’s fast-paced world, creating a sanctuary within your home is more important than ever. Whether you’re looking to unwind after a long day or to improve your mental well-being, transforming your living space into a sensory haven can offer much-needed solace. This approach, rooted in multisensory design, utilizes elements that stimulate the senses to enhance relaxation, reduce anxiety, and promote mindfulness.” Those were the introductory words of an interview with High Point UniversityAssistant Professor of Interior Design Lisa Williams.

Dr. Jane Nichols, Interior Design Department Chair at High Point University, introduced us to Williams noting that she had recently concluded a research study on sensory design.

Some will think that Sensory Design is only or primarily meant to be for individuals with special sensitivities such as those with autism spectrum disorders or Misophoniaa chronic condition that causes people to have intense emotional reactions to specific sound.

Whether you’re looking to unwind after a long day or to improve your mental well-being creating a sanctuary within your home is more important than ever.

Sensory design, however, can benefit everyone. “From soft lighting to tactile surfaces and soothing sounds, a sensory sanctuary provides an escape from daily stressors while improving your home environment,” Williams says.

The concept of a sensory haven originates from the development of Multisensory Environments (MSEs), which have been widely used in settings like hospitals, therapy rooms, and even universities to help individuals manage stress and anxiety. These spaces are designed to provide a balance of sensory stimulation and tranquility through carefully chosen elements that engage sight, sound, touch, smell, and even proprioception (the sense of spatial orientation).

Thoughtfully applied textures throughout create a tranquil and Zen atmosphere, perfect for unwinding after a long day.

Bedrooms are popular for including such elements. Styled in transitional elegance, the bedroom above showcases faux silk drapes, rattan accent and carved wood furniture. An area rug anchors the space, while an organic-shaped bench and a sizable mirror optimize the layout. Thoughtfully applied textures throughout create a tranquil and Zen atmosphere, perfect for unwinding after a long day.

Lighting is the Foundation

Movie-goers and TV watchers have known for years how lighting can establish a mood or dictate the emotional response of the audience. But there is science behind it as well. “The neuroscience is clear,” reported a Psychology Today article, “some colors and intensities of light create better atmospheres for particular situations while alternatives are found in settings where different sorts of thoughts and behaviors are most likely.”

The variety of lighting above includes candlelight for added sensory pleasure.

The variety of lighting above includes candlelight for added sensory pleasure. The metallic wallcovering and metallic accents gain emphasis from the lighting. Graceful hand-painted herons appear to be flying off the wall across the ceiling bring nature’s tranquility indoors.

Don’t forget how dimmable lighting can change the mood in a room. “More dynamic lighting, such as LED strips or fiber-optic lights, can enhance the sensory experience,” adds Williams. “These options allow you to adjust not only brightness but also colors and patterns, creating an interactive element that appeals to your sense of sight. Imagine a gentle glow of green or blue lights paired with natural sounds to create a forest-like atmosphere.”

Fostering Calmness Through Interaction of the Senses

Sound, touch, and aromas all can be incorporated to make the senses more active. Whether sounds from nature, like a waterfall or soft rain, or various types of music, sounds can easily change a mood. Williams, who has an MFA in Interior Architecture from UNC-Greensboro, explained how sensory room users there had the option to select sounds that aligned with their mood. “At home, consider installing a sound machine or using a smart speaker, or a tabletop fountain,” she says.

Sensory design appeals to the sense of touch use soft, textured materials such as velvet pillows, weighted blankets, stuffed animals, or even a hammock to encourage a tactile experience.

To appeal to the sense of touch, Williams recommends soft, textured materials such as velvet pillows, weighted blankets, stuffed animals, or even a hammock to encourage a tactile experience. Create inviting seating with cozy cushions. Create a space where you can physically and mentally sink into relaxation.

Enhance Your Home with Sensory Design

Aromatherapy is a tried and tested method to enhance relaxation and reduce stress. Essential oils such as lavender, peppermint, or citrus blends can be used in diffusers to fill the room with calming fragrances. “The quick-change feature on modern diffusers, such as the one used at UNC-Greensboro, allows for easy switching between scents to match your mood or the time of day,” Williams added.

“Ultimately, creating a sensory haven at home is about tailoring the space to your preferences and needs,” Williams says. “It’s a place where you have control over your surroundings. The idea is to transform a regular room into a personal oasis where you can escape, recharge, and find comfort.”

Wallpaper boasts a rich, centuries-old historyIt first appeared in China during the 17th century and gained popularity in the West, particularly in France, by the 1700s. Since then, it has remained a staple in homes worldwide. While some may consider it outdated, the truth is, wallpaper is still a popular alternative to paint, especially in bathrooms.

In this article, we’ll explore a range of bathroom ideas, from the best types of wallpaper for moisture-prone spaces to ideal prints and colors, how to use wallpaper to make a small bathroom feel larger, and tips for smooth application. Let’s get started!

Add a touch of glamor to your bathroom with a modern wallpaper.

Are All Wallpapers Created Equal?

Before you dive into redoing your bathroom, it’s essential to know that not all wallpapers are created equal. There are various types, each with advantages and drawbacks that determine its suitability for a bathroom. Here’s a quick look at the most common types:

Printed

Also known as traditional wallpaper, this is what comes to mind when most people think of wallpaper. It’s usually mass-produced, meaning it’s often of lower quality and prone to tearing. Avoid using printed papers in bathrooms, as its water-based inks can smudge due to humidity and steam, leaving your walls looking less than stellar.

A traditional floral print ties in well with modern bathroom furniture.

Mylar

Similar to printed wallpaper, Mylar includes a printed layer but with the addition of a protective polyester film. This makes it washable and more water-resistant, making it a great option for bathrooms. However, be mindful that it can emphasize any imperfections on your walls.

Grasscloth and Bamboo

Made from natural plant fibers, these wallpapers create a beautiful, textured look. Grasscloth wallpaper is woven from materials like hemp, cork, or reed, while bamboo wallpaper is made by gluing fibers onto a backing paper. Though they provide a stunning aesthetic, they are not ideal for high-moisture areas like bathrooms. Reserve them for your living room or bedroom, where humidity isn’t an issue.

Vinyl

Vinyl wallpaper is the go-to option for bathrooms. It’s durable, highly water-resistant, and easy to clean. Available in peel-and-stick varieties (also called removable wallpaper), it simplifies application while offering maximum protection against bathroom moisture.

Choosing a Design: Color and Pattern Options

Once you’ve selected the appropriate wallpaper material (vinyl or Mylar for bathrooms), it’s time to dive into the exciting part: choosing the design! While there are no strict rules when it comes to colors and patterns, these general guidelines will help ensure a polished look.

Solid Colors

Many prefer single-color wallpaper in bathrooms to avoid creating a chaotic or busy feel. Some popular shades include:

  • Monochrome: White wallpaper is timeless, creating a crisp, clean look. Dark shades like charcoal or black can add a dramatic, modern flair.
  • Cool Greens and Blues: Mint, sage, and baby blue evoke a serene, spa-like atmosphere. These calming hues are ideal for promoting relaxation in the bathroom.
  • Warm Yellows and Oranges: Muted tones like champagne, blush, or peach add a touch of warmth without overwhelming the space. Sandy beige or cream can also bring a soft, inviting glow to the room.

Patterns

There’s endless variety when it comes to wallpaper patterns. From bold geometric designs to intricate florals, you can infuse your bathroom with personality. Large, simple patterns in monochromatic tones work especially well, as they maintain a serene ambiance. Consider options like:

  • Botanical or Floral Prints: These add life and vibrancy when used on an accent wall.
  • Stone, Tile, or Marble Designs: These mimic luxurious materials without the hassle of upkeep, offering an elegant look with none of the maintenance.

A powder room is a great place to experiment with wallpaper.

Maximizing Space: Wallpaper for Small Bathrooms

Your choice of color and pattern plays a key role in how spacious your bathroom feels. For smaller bathrooms or powder rooms, large-scale geometric patterns can create the illusion of more space by tricking the eye into perceiving a larger surface area.

Conversely, smaller, intricate designs can make a room feel more confined and should be reserved for accent walls or small portions. Textured wallpaper that mimics materials like brick or wood can also give the illusion of depth, making a small bathroom appear roomier.

In terms of color, light shades work best for small bathrooms as they reflect light, making the space feel more open. Darker hues, while sophisticated, tend to absorb light, making a room feel smaller and cozier. Pale tones, especially white, are a foolproof choice.

Pair wallpaper with a tile of similar color for glamor and sophistication.

Tips and Tricks for Perfect Wallpaper Application

Once you’ve chosen your wallpaper, it’s time to apply it. While wallpaper installation can be labor-intensive, proper preparation will ensure a smooth process and lasting results.

1. Remove and Smooth
Begin by removing nails, hooks, and any wall imperfections. Sand down the surface to create a flat, even base. This ensures the wallpaper sticks properly, reducing the risk of water seeping in and causing mold.

2. Clean and Prime
Clean the walls thoroughly, using a sugar scrub if needed. If your walls have glossy paint, strip it using a vinegar solution. Once clean, apply a white primer to seal the surface.

3. Apply
For peel-and-stick wallpaper, simply remove the backing and apply it directly to the wall. For traditional wallpaper, use a paint roller to apply paste before affixing the wallpaper. In either case, use a brush to smooth the paper as you go. If applying wallpaper over tiles, make sure to clean, smooth, and sand down the surface to ensure the paper adheres properly.

Design Style

Clients sometimes ask our design professionals what their personal interior design style preference is. The answer is most likely something along the lines of “it’s your preference that is important.” Learning about different design styles is important for learning about your own taste but for now we’ll present a primer on the playfulness of Postmodernism.

Postmodernism is anti-authoritarianism and refuses to recognize the authority of any single design style.

Postmodernism

For making your own statement, for asserting your own individuality, for adding personal creativity, for being a bit rebellious—there’s no style like Postmodernism. The Museum of Modern Art describes Postmodernism as “a reaction against modernism. It is less a cohesive movement than an approach and attitude toward art, culture, and society. Its main characteristics include anti-authoritarianism, or refusal to recognize the authority of any single design style or definition of what art should be; and the collapsing of the distinction between high culture and mass or popular culture, and between art and everyday life. Postmodern art and architecture can be also characterized by a deliberate use of earlier styles and conventions, and an eclectic mixing of different artistic and popular styles and mediums.”

Playfully mix materials, colors, textures and unconventional art and furniture.

Flexibility

For some of us, it’s no surprise that Postmodern design philosophy arose in the 1960s, a time when parts of society increasingly challenged authority. Architects, designers and other creative types were bucking rigid modern functionalism in favor of flexible living spaces reflecting owners’ personalities. A usual goal of Postmodern interior design is to create a space that is truly unique.

Furnishings used in Postmodernism are limited only by one’s imagination and ability to find the unusual. An interior designer, of course, can help with that. Our access to resources is quite extensive.

This is your opportunity to playfully mix materials, colors, textures and sometimes even unconventional art and furniture. Designers love to help clients find that one “statement piece” that really sets a room apart. With Postmodern design, the entire room makes a statement. A bold one.

The Museum of Modern Art ( MoMA.org) describes Postmodernism as “a reaction against modernism."

Be Creative

Such creativity can be applied to any room. In a living room, for example, use a mix of vintage and modern furniture. Add bold, colorful rugs with geometric patterns. Accessorize with a combination of high-end art and playful décor items.

In the kitchen: Make your foundation brightly colored cabinets paired with stainless steel appliances. Open shelving will allow you to display an eclectic mix of dishware. Unique backsplashes with bold patterns can also add personality.

Ignore traditional design norms and prioritize your home's individuality.

In a bedroom: Combine classic with contemporary furniture. An unusually shaped headboard with a bold color can make a striking statement. Top it off with layers of bedding in different patterns and textures.

Don’t forget the bathroom: It’s a wonderful space for very bold wallpaper or tiles with geometric or floral patterns. Mingling retro and modern fixtures can be fun, especially with colorful faucets. Clinch the look with quirky accessories like an uncommonly shaped mirror.

If challenging traditional design norms and prioritizing individuality and creativity sounds like you, work with Decorating Den Interiors. We can help you include elements of surprise and humor in your home.

Coffee tables are more than just functional pieces of furniture; they are central to the design and ambiance of living spaces. Whether your taste leans towards minimalist, rustic, or contemporary, the coffee table serves as a canvas for personal expression and practical utility. In this comprehensive guide, we explore the nuances of styling, offering tips, ideas, and inspiration to transform this seemingly simple piece into a focal point of your home décor.

Select a coffee table with character and personality to bring life to your living room or family room.

Understanding the Coffee Table

The coffee table has evolved from its humble beginnings as a tea-serving table in Victorian times to a versatile centerpiece in modern living rooms. Typically positioned in the center of seating arrangements, its purpose extends beyond holding coffee mugs to providing a surface for books, decor items, and occasional meals. Choosing the right table involves considering not only its size and shape but also how it complements the overall aesthetic of your living space. Contact us for a huge selection of amazing coffee tables.

The size of your living room and the seating arrangement dictate the dimensions of your coffee table.

Selecting the Perfect Coffee Table

When selecting a coffee table, several factors come into play:

Size and Proportion: The size of your living room and the seating arrangement dictate the dimensions of your coffee table. It should be proportional to the surrounding furniture, neither too large nor too small.

Material and Finish: Coffee tables come in various materials such as wood, glass, metal, and even acrylic. The choice of material impacts both the aesthetic and durability of the piece. Consider how the material complements other furnishings and your lifestyle. For a table with natural elements look at Palecek

Style and Design: From sleek modern designs to classic, ornate pieces, coffee tables are available in a myriad of styles. Choose a design that harmonizes with your existing décor or serves as a statement piece to anchor the room.

Once you've chosen the perfect coffee table, the next step is styling it to reflect your personality and enhance the ambiance of your living space.

Styling Your Coffee Table

Once you’ve chosen the perfect coffee table, the next step is styling it to reflect your personality and enhance the ambiance of your living space. Here are some expert tips and creative ideas for coffee table styling:

1. Layering and Balance
Achieving balance is key to creating an aesthetically pleasing arrangement on your table. Start with a foundational piece such as a decorative tray or a stack of books. Layer items of varying heights and textures to add visual interest without overcrowding the table.

2. Mixing Materials and Textures
Incorporate a mix of materials and textures to add depth to your display. Combine smooth ceramics with rough-textured natural elements like wood or woven baskets. This contrast creates a dynamic visual appeal.

3. Greenery and Natural Elements
Introducing greenery such as small potted plants or succulents brings life and freshness to your coffee table. Choose low-maintenance plants that thrive indoors and complement your chosen décor style.

Acrylic tables provide functionality, but also take up less space visually making a room appear larger.

4. Personal Touches
Display personal items such as family photos, travel souvenirs, or heirlooms to personalize your coffee table. These items not only add sentimental value but also serve as conversation starters.

5. Functional Décor
Select décor items that serve a dual purpose, such as decorative boxes or trays that can also hold remote controls or coasters. This ensures that your coffee table remains both stylish and functional.

6. Seasonal and Occasional Changes
Refresh your coffee table décor seasonally or for special occasions. Swap out items like candles, seasonal florals, or themed décor to reflect the changing seasons or upcoming holidays.

Look for coffee tables to complement the decor of your space or select one that will become a conversation piece.

Coffee Table Styling Ideas

Minimalist Elegance
For a minimalist look, opt for a sleek, low-profile coffee table with clean lines. Style with a single art book, a minimalist vase with a single stem, and a small sculpture or geometric decor item for a contemporary touch.

Rustic Charm
Embrace rustic charm with a wooden table featuring natural grain and texture. Decorate with a woven tray filled with candles, a stack of vintage books tied with twine, and a small bowl of pinecones or dried flowers for a cozy, country-inspired feel.

Make sure that when selecting a coffee table that people can walk around it comfortably.

Modern Chic
Choose a glass or acrylic coffee table for a modern, airy look. Style with a metallic tray holding a few curated objects such as metallic sculptures, a small cluster of candles in varying heights, and a decorative bowl with polished stones or beads.

Eclectic Mix
Mix and match styles and eras by combining a vintage table with eclectic decor items. Pair an antique trunk coffee table with an assortment of global artifacts, vintage postcards under a glass tabletop, and a mix of mismatched candles in colorful holders.

Unusual shapes and color are a wonderful idea to add color to the center of the room.

More than a piece of furniture

The coffee table is more than just a piece of furniture — it’s an opportunity to showcase your personal style and creativity. Whether you prefer a minimalist aesthetic, rustic charm, modern chic, or an eclectic mix, there are endless ways to style your table to suit your taste and enhance your living space. By carefully selecting the right table and curating a thoughtful arrangement of decor items, you can transform this functional piece into a captivating centerpiece that ties your room together.

Your local interior designer Michelle Jett can help you consider all the factors in selecting the style of coffee table and the styling for the surface, all to top off your room design in a way that makes your room more beautiful and reflective of your personality and lifestyle.

Whether it’s an arch, a bow or bay, a corner, a double-hung, French doors, a picture or another type, your Decorating Den Interiors design professional can help you select the type of custom window treatment that will work best.

Tall windows require the help of our team which includes an expert window treatment installer.

DO remember that window treatments are not just about beauty

Though a simple window treatment may cover a bare window, it might not cater to all your needs. Window treatments extend beyond mere aesthetics; they encompass privacy, sun shielding, sound dampening, and beyond. Interior designer Michelle Jett will engage you with tailored inquiries to pinpoint the specific features and advantages you seek.

DO consider the wide variety of options for your window treatments

Custom drapery can frame your windows as stationary drapery panels or close fully for privacy and insulation from heat and cold.

Draperies introduce softness and texture, while also serving as sound absorbers and insulators. They can be drawn closed or left open, among other functions.

Kitchens and bathrooms often require simpler window treatments; Top treatments, blinds and shades.

Top treatments offer boundless options, encouraging both designers and clients to embark on imaginative journeys. Sometimes, all it takes is a cornice or valance to inject vibrancy into a space. And with intriguing names like cascades and jabots, the possibilities become even more captivating.

Fabric shades are clean-edged and neat and can take a back seat to beautiful architectural details when up and out of the way or add stunning emphasis.

Whether standing alone or serving as a striking complement to other window treatments, shades offer a diverse array of shapes and configurations. Fabric shades, often referred to as “soft” shades, boast crisp edges and a tidy appearance. They can discreetly recede when raised, allowing architectural features to shine, or become focal points themselves, adding striking emphasis to the space.

Shutters allow you to adjust the amount of natural light entering the room. With easy manipulation of slats, you can diffuse light, reduce glare, or close all. They also add value to your home.

Shutters and blinds can fill a variety of roles. They can interface with any interior due to the range of colors, materials, stains, and decorative features.

It may be necessary to combine different types of treatments as seen here.

When one concept is not enough, DO explore the beauty of combining different types of treatments.

DON’T forget to consider decorative hardware and trim

Drapery hardware is the crowning jewel for your custom window treatments. Ask your professional to show you the many beautiful variations available.

These elements customize your treatment and add individuality. The range of materials available is huge and amazing.

The most important DON’T is don’t forget to call your Decorating Den Interiors professional for the best in custom window treatments.

While summer isn’t in full swing, you must start planning for your outdoor space immediately. This ensures that your patio is ready to be enjoyed once the days get super hot and the sun stays out later.

However, this doesn’t just include watering your grass or ensuring your patio is clean — it takes a lot more than that to transformyour backyard into a stunning escape. Here are some backyard patio designs to consider for your outdoor oasis.

Tips for Building the Perfect Patio

To take full advantage of your home, give your backyard some love. And no green space is complete without a beautiful back patio set up. From al fresco dining to a refreshing space to hang out with friends, a patio can act as a second dining and living room area if appropriately designed.

Here are some best practices for building your picture-perfect patio:

A white building with a palm tree and a window.

Look at Lush Landscaping

The great outdoors are considered great for a reason. Plants truly add so much natural beauty to any space, including your backyard. Put in trees, shrubbery and plants that can complete the space and provide some much-needed protection from the hot sun.

For a fun twist, put in an herb garden that will look beautiful and add flavor to your summer menu. You could do this in a flower bed directly in your backyard or use elevated planter boxes for a chic take on your garden. This style of planter also keeps you from having to constantly bend down to get the herbs needed to spice up your entrees. Use a natural wood option or opt for a cute tin one instead — both are great for your yard.

Brighten Your Yard With Outdoor Lighting

While the sun stays out much longer in the warmer months, it does have to set eventually. However, this doesn’t have to end your outdoor fun! Playful fixtures like strung fairy lights or solar lights are great options, so your get-togethers can last long into the night.

You’ll want to determine the type of fixture based on the functionality and purpose of your lights. If you want ambient, warm lighting, an outdoor chandelier or bistro lights can be hung and strung above your outdoor table. Or, if you want brighter, more effective lighting, you could have lanterns stuck into the ground surrounding your most used areas — namely, the grill, outdoor table, or hung above outdoor chairs. That way, you can always do what you need to, whether that be to make burgers or curl up with your favorite book under the stars.

Select the Perfect Outdoor Furniture

When it comes to outdoor furniture, you want pieces that are going to last. Choose comfortable and sturdy outdoor chairs, benches, picnic tables — even a parasol — to sit and enjoy the fresh open air all summer long. You can also make the space extra comfortable by throwing in some outdoor pillows and blankets that not only look cute but also make long hours spent in your backyard as cozy as possible.

If you have a poolside patio, don’t forget about comfortable lounge chairs that can help you get a tan while you dry off. Additionally, extra storage for swimming gear, towels and pool chemicals can keep your outdoor items organized.

Don’t Forget Outdoor Flooring

While concrete pavers and wood flooring are popular, don’t be afraid to mix and match materials. A combination of natural wood and gray pavers can create a beautiful contrast that will leave guests wanting the same look at their house. Or, if you want to go a different route, you could create a stone patio with a matching retaining wall for a cohesive look and feel.

Whichever flooring you choose, just be sure to match the outdoor furniture with the pavers or concrete patio. You could create a stunning backyard by ensuring everything looks like a complete picture with no pieces out of place.

5 Trendy Backyard Patio Designs That Won’t Go Out of Style

Want to keep up with the most popular patio design ideas without having to swap your design choices every year? Follow these patio designs that won’t go out of style:

A tiled plunge pool with lanterns lights hanging above.

Create an Outdoor Oasis With Water Features

Adding a water feature like a pond or fountain can make a splash in your backyard, providing a living and moving piece of art for all to enjoy. This eye-catching design choice can add sound and movement that’s both relaxing and unique — especially if you live in a noisy neighborhood with lots of traffic. Think you can’t do this because you have a small patio? Think again! There are clever and space-saving ways to incorporate water, even in a small space. Try a bird bath, garden water bowl, or a watertight trough in a variety of materials.

Get Bright Plant Pots

While you may think of greens, blues and other organic colors when going over your patio palette, you have more shade options than you might think. Use colorful pots for flowers, trees and other plants for bright bursts of color. These pots can be a variety of shapes and sizes, providing visual interest and making the yard even more lush. You could also line pots along the border of your garden or walkway to create a bright boundary.

Incorporate Built-in Outdoor Seating

If your patio has less space or you’re looking for non-traditional seats, garden seats built into the patio can be a nice twist on classic lounge chairs. This could look like building bench seats into the sides of a raised bed or retaining wall, making the space functional without sacrificing the look.

Put Together a Grilling Station

The ultimate patio space includes a grilling station with all the necessities to throw together a gourmet meal fit for royalty. Think about the type of grill you’d like, then add a small countertop for prep work, drawers for storage — even a sink if you want to go all out.

Nothing screams neighborhood BBQ like a full-blown patio kitchen right there in your backyard. Prepare meals while hosting guests without having to step inside. This can make outdoor dining a breeze by having everything you need right in front of you.

Consider an Outdoor Fireplace or Fire Pit

Outdoor living is best done when there’s a fireplace or fire pit to gather around and roast marshmallows. The perfect summer evening includes bright flames and amazing friends and family nearby — as long as you don’t mind the smoke smell.

If you have a covered patio or enclosed patio, an outdoor fireplace can be a great addition. It can also make outdoor dining feel even more chic. If you don’t have a covered or enclosed patio, a fire pit is another option that works just as well.

Finding your personal design style

When you embrace your individual style, your home can become a personal museum of all the things you love. What better way for your family and guests to learn what exactly makes you tick?  When you feel relaxed in your space, other people will too.

Whether you are working on your own or with an interior designer, you’ll need to start with a general idea of what you’re looking for. You don’t need to have your own style figured out in full. But it does help to have a general idea of what goals you’re trying to achieve or what spaces you’re trying to transform.

To help you get a bit more detailed in your thinking, here are some tips to help you on your journey of interior design self-awareness.

Create a Mood Board

A mood board is a visual tool that helps you communicate your design concepts and ideas. It’s a collection of images, materials, color palettes, and other elements arranged to evoke a particular style or feeling. Before getting started, determine the theme or concept you want to convey through your mood board. Whether it’s a specific interior style, a color palette, a mood, or a project concept, having a clear idea will guide your selection process and ensure cohesiveness. If you need some help, just do some online research.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

Go beyond your mood board and collect some images of rooms you like. Our website is an excellent resource for images.  Analyze each room and make notes about the specifics in each that you especially like and why you like them. Pay attention to colors, patterns, furniture styles, and decorative accents that consistently appear in your selections. Are there any common themes emerging?

Design for your lifestyle

At Michelle Jett – Decorating Den Interiors, we’ve been dedicated to Lifestyle Decorating, with a central focus on creating spaces that fits within our client’s lifestyle.  Reflect on your own, and your family’s, lifestyle, interests, and personality to determine what you want your space to feel like. Do you prefer a cozy and rustic vibe, a sleek and modern aesthetic, or a colorful and eclectic atmosphere.

For a bedroom like this with a bed and a bench with touches of yellow, work with interior designer, Michelle Jett.

Research Design Styles

Familiarize yourself with different interior design styles by researching and learning about their characteristics, history, and key elements. Some of the more popular styles include Mid-Century Modern, Industrial, Bohemian, and Coastal. More recently, new styles such as Japandi, Hygge, and Biophilic have popped up on the scene. And of course, there is Sustainable Design

A group of different textures and colors of carpet, fabric, and tile.

Experiment with Samples

Before making any significant design decisions, experiment with samples of paint colors, fabrics, and materials to see how they look and feel in your space. This will help you visualize your ideas and make informed choices.

Start Small

You don’t have to overhaul your entire space at once. Start small by updating one room or area at a time, incorporating new elements, and gradually refining your style as you go along.

Getting the yard ready

Before diving into any decorative projects for your porch or patio, it’s essential to begin with the basics: your yard. Firstly, clearing away any remaining leaves, trimming the grass, and preparing the soil for new plantings are crucial initial steps. This foundational work lays the groundwork for transforming your outdoor living area and provides a clean slate for your creative endeavors.

Assess what you already have

Now that your yard is in order, shifting focus to your porch and patio is in order. Reflect on whether you aim to rejuvenate your current decor or start afresh. Regardless of your outdoor space’s size, it’s vital to contemplate how to make it functional. You can gradually introduce new elements or entirely revamp your space. When retrieving your furniture and decor from storage, evaluate whether your current pieces require a refresh or if it’s time for a change that better complements your outdoor lifestyle.
