Our favorite blogs of 2024 — interior design to transform your mood

Does entering your home or your favorite room positively transform your mood when you enter it? That desire seemed to be prevalent as we looked back over the year to examine our most popular blog posts. Three of the four most read were on Sensory Design, Biophilic Design, and using wallpaper to give a bathroom a spa-like finish.

Biophilic Design prioritizes the integration of nature and natural elements into our living and working spaces.

An Appreciation for Nature

Biophilic Design, where nature and natural elements take center stage in our homes and workplaces, is the leading trend we’ve seen at the recent High Point N.C. Home Furnishings Markets. The emphasis on Biophilic is based on the growing appreciation for nature and its calming influence on our lives.

People are seeking more comfort and coziness at home in the form of painted nooks, moody wallpaper, warm wood tones, and rich, colorful upholstery. The key to this trend is the focus on calm, comfort, and connection.

Read our 2024 blog on Biophilic Design.

Creating a sensory haven at home is about tailoring the space to your preferences and needs.

Sensory Design Benefits Everyone

Biophilic fits under the umbrella term Sensory Design. Some will think that Sensory Design is only or primarily meant to be for individuals with special sensitivities such as those with autism spectrum disorders or Misophonia, a chronic condition that causes people to have intense emotional reactions to specific sound.

Sensory Design, however, can benefit everyone. The over-arching idea is to create a sanctuary for escape for this fast-paced world. “Whether you’re looking to unwind after a long day or to improve your mental well-being, transforming your living space into a sensory haven can offer much-needed solace. This approach, rooted in multi-sensory design, utilizes elements that stimulate the senses to enhance relaxation, reduce anxiety, and promote mindfulness,” said High Point University Assistant Professor of Interior Design Lisa Williams.

Wallpaper is still a popular alternative to paint, especially in bathrooms.

We all need a spa-like bathroom

Having a spa-like bathroom is certainly a delightful space to transform your mood. Some people might think wallpaper is outdated, but the truth is that it’s still very popular as an alternative to paint, especially for giving a bathroom a spa-like finish.

Wallpaper comes in multiple types. Each has pros and cons that make it either an excellent or terrible choice for a bathroom. There is printed, mylar, grasscloth, bamboo, and vinyl. You can choose from many colors or combinations.

Style your coffee table to reflect your personality and enhance the ambiance of your living space.Winning design project by Michelle Jett.

Select a coffee table that suits your needs

The décor on your surfaces can also affect your mood. A surface can look chaotic, which can be disturbing; or stylish, which can settle you. Think about coffee tables. No, they are not passé. Looking through this year’s room makeover entries in our International Dream Room competition judged by interior design journalists clearly indicates that coffee tables are certainly in vogue.

The basic lesson for styling a coffee table involves using varied heights, varied materials, layering items, and incorporating nature. Sometimes the table itself is a piece of art and too much styling on the surface would take away from the artistry of the furnishing itself. Upholstered pieces can double for ottoman-type use and table-type use. It takes only a tray to display an accessory or two or serve up some drinks. Of course, there also are multifunction coffee tables.

We hope you enjoyed the favorite blogs of 2024. Michelle Jett can help you create your own special sanctuary or help you with your room design in a way that makes your room more beautiful and reflective of your personality and lifestyle.

Coffee tables are more than just functional pieces of furniture; they are central to the design and ambiance of living spaces. Whether your taste leans towards minimalist, rustic, or contemporary, the coffee table serves as a canvas for personal expression and practical utility. In this comprehensive guide, we explore the nuances of styling, offering tips, ideas, and inspiration to transform this seemingly simple piece into a focal point of your home décor.

Select a coffee table with character and personality to bring life to your living room or family room.

Understanding the Coffee Table

The coffee table has evolved from its humble beginnings as a tea-serving table in Victorian times to a versatile centerpiece in modern living rooms. Typically positioned in the center of seating arrangements, its purpose extends beyond holding coffee mugs to providing a surface for books, decor items, and occasional meals. Choosing the right table involves considering not only its size and shape but also how it complements the overall aesthetic of your living space. Contact us for a huge selection of amazing coffee tables.

The size of your living room and the seating arrangement dictate the dimensions of your coffee table.

Selecting the Perfect Coffee Table

When selecting a coffee table, several factors come into play:

Size and Proportion: The size of your living room and the seating arrangement dictate the dimensions of your coffee table. It should be proportional to the surrounding furniture, neither too large nor too small.

Material and Finish: Coffee tables come in various materials such as wood, glass, metal, and even acrylic. The choice of material impacts both the aesthetic and durability of the piece. Consider how the material complements other furnishings and your lifestyle. For a table with natural elements look at Palecek

Style and Design: From sleek modern designs to classic, ornate pieces, coffee tables are available in a myriad of styles. Choose a design that harmonizes with your existing décor or serves as a statement piece to anchor the room.

Once you've chosen the perfect coffee table, the next step is styling it to reflect your personality and enhance the ambiance of your living space.

Styling Your Coffee Table

Once you’ve chosen the perfect coffee table, the next step is styling it to reflect your personality and enhance the ambiance of your living space. Here are some expert tips and creative ideas for coffee table styling:

1. Layering and Balance
Achieving balance is key to creating an aesthetically pleasing arrangement on your table. Start with a foundational piece such as a decorative tray or a stack of books. Layer items of varying heights and textures to add visual interest without overcrowding the table.

2. Mixing Materials and Textures
Incorporate a mix of materials and textures to add depth to your display. Combine smooth ceramics with rough-textured natural elements like wood or woven baskets. This contrast creates a dynamic visual appeal.

3. Greenery and Natural Elements
Introducing greenery such as small potted plants or succulents brings life and freshness to your coffee table. Choose low-maintenance plants that thrive indoors and complement your chosen décor style.

Acrylic tables provide functionality, but also take up less space visually making a room appear larger.

4. Personal Touches
Display personal items such as family photos, travel souvenirs, or heirlooms to personalize your coffee table. These items not only add sentimental value but also serve as conversation starters.

5. Functional Décor
Select décor items that serve a dual purpose, such as decorative boxes or trays that can also hold remote controls or coasters. This ensures that your coffee table remains both stylish and functional.

6. Seasonal and Occasional Changes
Refresh your coffee table décor seasonally or for special occasions. Swap out items like candles, seasonal florals, or themed décor to reflect the changing seasons or upcoming holidays.

Look for coffee tables to complement the decor of your space or select one that will become a conversation piece.

Coffee Table Styling Ideas

Minimalist Elegance
For a minimalist look, opt for a sleek, low-profile coffee table with clean lines. Style with a single art book, a minimalist vase with a single stem, and a small sculpture or geometric decor item for a contemporary touch.

Rustic Charm
Embrace rustic charm with a wooden table featuring natural grain and texture. Decorate with a woven tray filled with candles, a stack of vintage books tied with twine, and a small bowl of pinecones or dried flowers for a cozy, country-inspired feel.

Make sure that when selecting a coffee table that people can walk around it comfortably.

Modern Chic
Choose a glass or acrylic coffee table for a modern, airy look. Style with a metallic tray holding a few curated objects such as metallic sculptures, a small cluster of candles in varying heights, and a decorative bowl with polished stones or beads.

Eclectic Mix
Mix and match styles and eras by combining a vintage table with eclectic decor items. Pair an antique trunk coffee table with an assortment of global artifacts, vintage postcards under a glass tabletop, and a mix of mismatched candles in colorful holders.

Unusual shapes and color are a wonderful idea to add color to the center of the room.

More than a piece of furniture

The coffee table is more than just a piece of furniture — it’s an opportunity to showcase your personal style and creativity. Whether you prefer a minimalist aesthetic, rustic charm, modern chic, or an eclectic mix, there are endless ways to style your table to suit your taste and enhance your living space. By carefully selecting the right table and curating a thoughtful arrangement of decor items, you can transform this functional piece into a captivating centerpiece that ties your room together.

Your local interior designer Michelle Jett can help you consider all the factors in selecting the style of coffee table and the styling for the surface, all to top off your room design in a way that makes your room more beautiful and reflective of your personality and lifestyle.

Finding your personal design style

When you embrace your individual style, your home can become a personal museum of all the things you love. What better way for your family and guests to learn what exactly makes you tick?  When you feel relaxed in your space, other people will too.

Whether you are working on your own or with an interior designer, you’ll need to start with a general idea of what you’re looking for. You don’t need to have your own style figured out in full. But it does help to have a general idea of what goals you’re trying to achieve or what spaces you’re trying to transform.

To help you get a bit more detailed in your thinking, here are some tips to help you on your journey of interior design self-awareness.

A person adding additional images to a corkboard.

Create a Mood Board

A mood board is a visual tool that helps you communicate your design concepts and ideas. It’s a collection of images, materials, color palettes, and other elements arranged to evoke a particular style or feeling. Before getting started, determine the theme or concept you want to convey through your mood board. Whether it’s a specific interior style, a color palette, a mood, or a project concept, having a clear idea will guide your selection process and ensure cohesiveness. If you need some help, just do some online research.

A living room with blue sofas, two leather chairs, and a coffee table with a view into the kitchen.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

Go beyond your mood board and collect some images of rooms you like. Our website is an excellent resource for images.  Analyze each room and make notes about the specifics in each that you especially like and why you like them. Pay attention to colors, patterns, furniture styles, and decorative accents that consistently appear in your selections. Are there any common themes emerging?

Design for your lifestyle

At Michelle Jett – Decorating Den Interiors, we’ve been dedicated to Lifestyle Decorating, with a central focus on creating spaces that fits within our client’s lifestyle.  Reflect on your own, and your family’s, lifestyle, interests, and personality to determine what you want your space to feel like. Do you prefer a cozy and rustic vibe, a sleek and modern aesthetic, or a colorful and eclectic atmosphere.

For a bedroom like this with a bed and a bench with touches of yellow, work with interior designer, Michelle Jett.

Research Design Styles

Familiarize yourself with different interior design styles by researching and learning about their characteristics, history, and key elements. Some of the more popular styles include Mid-Century Modern, Industrial, Bohemian, and Coastal. More recently, new styles such as Japandi, Hygge, and Biophilic have popped up on the scene. And of course, there is Sustainable Design

A group of different textures and colors of carpet, fabric, and tile.

Experiment with Samples

Before making any significant design decisions, experiment with samples of paint colors, fabrics, and materials to see how they look and feel in your space. This will help you visualize your ideas and make informed choices.

Start Small

You don’t have to overhaul your entire space at once. Start small by updating one room or area at a time, incorporating new elements, and gradually refining your style as you go along.

Biophilic Interior Design, where nature and natural elements take center stage in our homes and workplaces, is the leading trend we’ve seen at the recent High Point N.C. Home Furnishings Markets. It’s about connecting people and nature within the home environment. Biophilic design elements play a therapeutic role as they are thought of as calming, uplifting, and anxiety-reducing. Designs should include hues that mimic natural occurrences by bringing nature into the home. This can be in the form of rounded walls, curved furniture, skylights, natural elements, and colors.

A living room with a fireplace and a couch. Subtle biophilic art and detail elements.

Biophilic uses outdoor inspirations as gigantic mood boards that allow you to select from a multitude of colors, materials, shapes, and patterns. Think lush plants, warm wood, cool stone, and water and light features. Not only does it look beautiful, but it also has been proven to boost our moods, increase productivity, and reduce stress levels.

Nature’s calming influence

The emphasis on Biophilic is based on the growing appreciation for nature and its calming influence on our lives. People are seeking more comfort and coziness at home in the form of painted nooks, moody wallpaper, warm wood tones, and rich, colorful upholstery. There is a rise of soft, warm nuances that are spirit-lifting and dopamine-enhancing. We want spaces that bring nostalgic moments to mind, fond recollections from our past that elicit a sense of warmth, comfort, and longing.

A bed with a floral wallpaper above it. Elevate your living experience with Michelle Jett - Decorating Den Interiors.

We are seeing a cheerful bouquet of colors which will continue. Blues and greens, of course, are obvious colors for connecting with nature. Adding to those two popular colors are pink and yellow undertones. For a calming, relaxed, and welcoming interior, earthy or nature-inspired tones are taking over. Hues such as ochre, tan, taupe, light pinks, and light greys are taking over bedroom and dining room schemes.

Classic floral and lattice patterns are mingled with textural solids and delicate small-scale patterns for ease of layering. The color palettes explore a variety of inviting tones including buttercup yellows, corals, sage greens, clean blues, and earthy neutrals.

If you are looking for a Biophilic color palette try out Sherwin Williams’s collection: Emerald Designer Editionor Behr’s BioNature Collection.

More emphasis on details

Intricate details enhance a room and make it utterly unique and interesting. They are indicators of quality, identity, functionality, and care. They tell stories and create memories. Like jewelry for your wardrobe, intricate details are the final piece of a room’s design. There is a definite trend to focus more on detail in selecting furnishings.

A marble and glass table with a vase of flowers on it. Intricate details are the hallmark of a truly unique and fascinating biophilic space.

Texture also adds detail to a room’s design. In fabrics we see mohair, dimensional and mixed yarn boucle to add a softer personality to the design. There is also continued interest in Chenille, and shearling. In metals, we see burnished bronze and brown-based metals versus yellow or silver -based metals. In ironworks, there is a more hand-forged look. In stone, a more honed feeling, with softer raw edges. In wood, there continues to be raised grains and wire-bushed looks which creates a feeling of being close to the material. In natural materials, there is a move from split rattan to rush weaving and rush seating. In glass, we are seeing more ombre’, some opalescence, and more color. Tinted, milked frosted, and ombre’ are the story whether through urns and vases or tabletop.

Soft lines and more farmhouse

This year, designers and homeowners alike are leaning toward furniture and home elements that embrace soft lines. Spaces continue to have curvilinear shapes and a cocooning environment. In a turbulent world, we look for our homes to be our safe-haven or refuge. Cozy, comfortable living rooms or family rooms are on trend. Curved lines represent the fluid movement of water. Furniture designers have spotted the opportunity to bring people back together; a curved sofa, for example, can do that.

A living room with white chairs and a coffee table. Enhance your home with touches of nature with Biophilic design.

Yes, Farmhouse Design is still popular.

Today’s farmhouse design takes the comfortable, relaxed farmhouse style and adds modern touches such as smooth lines, glossy accents, and neutral color schemes. It’s less rustic, more sophisticated and uses contemporary design elements like stainless steel appliances, granite countertops and sleek lighting. It is often characterized by using natural materials, such as wood, stone, and metal, as well as vintage and distressed furniture.

The key to these trends is the focus on calm, comfort, and connection.

If you’re interested in incorporating Biophilic design into your home, we are here to help! Contact us today so we can get started on your next project!

At Michelle Jett – Decorating Den Interiors, we’ve been dedicated to Lifestyle Decorating for many years, focusing on enhancing well-being within living spaces. The interior design community has recently embraced the Danish term “hygge” (pronounced hyoo-guh), which encapsulates a design philosophy rooted in fostering contentment and overall well-being through thoughtful space planning and decoration.

It’s no surprise that hygge has found a place in the world of interior design, as our homes play a pivotal role in our comfort and happiness. While each individual’s lifestyle may lead to their unique interpretation of hygge, everyone can incorporate several common themes into their living spaces.

First and foremost, think about comfort. What elements make you feel at ease? Is it the inviting touch of soft textures, the luxury of lounging on a plush sofa, or the soothing presence of neutral colors and earthy tones? Consider what’s underfoot and the appeal of throw pillows that cradle your back or head. When the temperature drops, do you reach for a cherished blanket, an heirloom afghan, or a quilt that evokes fond memories? Does your furry friend have a cozy spot by your side?

Now, let’s talk lighting. What kind of illumination sets the perfect mood for you? Is it the warm and intimate glow of candles, the mesmerizing flicker of an actual or simulated fire, or the flexibility of a dimmer switch? Don’t forget the subtle influence of scents, which can contribute to the ambiance.

Nature can be a powerful source of comfort. How do greenery and plants affect your space and your mood? Consider incorporating plants, whether hanging from the ceiling or adorning your shelves. Additionally, images of nature as wall art can introduce a sense of tranquility and connection to the outdoors. Don’t forget wood. Even the most contemporary of rooms warm up when wood elements are introduced. You don’t have to go complete hunting-camp look to experience the effect of hygge.

Outdoor spaces, too, can benefit from thinking hygge. Make that deck or patio the perfect space to say, “Let’s eat outside” or “Let’s have happy hour outside.” Elements of fire, wood, lighting, and textures can all add to the coziness of your outdoor space.

Window treatments are another mood-setting design element. The pair of banded shades in a glittering neutral fabric grace the windows but are also functional to provide dimmed-to-light filtering to a fully exposed glass effect. A restful and delicate fabric with a subtle floral pattern peacefully frames the window.

Incorporating these elements into your home’s design will help you achieve a hygge-inspired interior tailored to your unique tastes and needs. Ultimately, it’s all about creating a space where you can truly relax and find contentment because your home should be your sanctuary.

Contact us today so we can get started on incorporating some thoughtful design to your home!

In the fashion world, the iconic black dress donned by Audrey Hepburn in the 1961 classic “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” remains etched in our collective memory as an epitome of sophistication and grace. Just as various James Bonds have defined black-tie attire, it begs the question: which actor wore it best? The allure of black transcends mere clothing; it is a hue that has intrigued scholars of both fashion and color, revealing its multifaceted symbolic meanings, from austerity and virtue to wealth, sophistication, eroticism, mourning, and even a hint of intrigue and darkness, as noted in a recent Harvard Crimson article.
Today, we see black emerging as a timeless classic, radiating sophistication and elegance. Picture this: walking into a room where black has been thoughtfully incorporated feels like a grand entrance in the perfect black ensemble. It exudes an air of luxury, inviting admiration and intrigue.

Black is a transformative color; it can be that dramatic focal point your space craves. A carefully chosen piece of furniture, a set of luxurious window treatments, or exquisite accessories can elevate your interior design. The expert touch lies in harmoniously weaving black into the tapestry of your space, perhaps complemented by accents of opulent gold. This harmonious pairing will undoubtedly elicit your guests’ gasps of awe and appreciation.

But why stop there? Imagine adorning your walls with black and embracing geometric shapes and metallic tones through exquisite wallpapers. From tween rooms that give them confidence for the next stage in life to sophisticated primary bedrooms that exude a sense of calm and luxury, black-infused wallpapers can become the magnetic center of your space.

As in all things design, balance is vital. Decorating with black doesn’t mean surrendering to a somber or stark ambiance. Quite the contrary, black can transform your living space into a stylish, inviting haven when artfully combined with other colors and textures. It’s about striking that perfect equilibrium, just like crafting a memorable outfit that leaves an indelible impression.

If you’re ready to explore the world of interior design with black as your muse, I invite you to embark on this journey with us. Our team of skilled professionals at Michelle Jett, Decorating Den Interiors is ready to guide you through the art of infusing sophistication and elegance into your home with the timeless power of black. “Remote work isn’t going away—and executives know it.” That headline in the Harvard Business Review (August 2023) suggests that the demand for home office space will stay strong. For further evidence, consider this Fortune.com headline: “Smucker’s return-to-office plan is a full embrace of remote worker.”

In today’s fast-paced world, remote work has become more than just a trend; it’s a transformative way of life. The ability to work from the comfort of your home provides unparalleled flexibility, but it also brings new challenges. One of the keys to remote work success is having a well-designed home office that inspires creativity, productivity, and overall well-being.

Whether you’re a seasoned remote worker or just beginning your work-from-home adventure, these tips and insights will help you create a workspace that not only meets your practical needs but also elevates your remote work experience to new heights.

Maybe you’re converting a small niche space, making over a no-longer-needed bedroom, making an office space as part of a large multi-purpose room, or just making a statement in your current space, we can provide a variety of inspirations to help you unlock the full potential of your home office.

1. Start with Ergonomics:

Your home office should be a place of comfort and efficiency. Begin by investing in ergonomic furniture, including an adjustable chair and a desk that suits your working style. Proper ergonomics reduce strain, boost focus, and enhance productivity.

2. Choose the Right Location:

Location matters when it comes to your home office. Select a space that is quiet, well-lit, and away from distractions. Natural light can do wonders for your mood and energy levels, so try to position your desk near a window if possible.

3. Personalize Your Space:

Your home office should reflect your personality and inspire your work. Decorate your workspace with items that motivate and inspire you, such as artwork, inspirational quotes, or even a vision board. A personalized space creates a sense of ownership and boosts creativity.

4. Declutter and Organize:

A cluttered workspace can be a productivity killer. Invest in storage solutions that keep your office tidy and organized. Decluttering not only improves efficiency but also reduces stress.

5. Color Psychology:

Colors have a significant impact on your mood and productivity. Choose a color scheme that aligns with your goals. For instance, blue promotes focus, green fosters creativity, and white provides a clean and fresh look.

6. Tech and Connectivity:

Ensure that your home office is equipped with the necessary technology and a strong internet connection. A seamless tech setup is essential for remote work success, so invest in quality hardware and reliable internet service.

7. Multi-Functional Zones:

Your home office can serve multiple purposes. Create distinct zones for work, relaxation, and even exercise. This versatility allows you to maximize the use of your space and recharge when needed.

8. Biophilic Design:

Incorporating natural elements into your home office, such as indoor plants or natural materials, can improve air quality and create a more calming environment.

9. Stay Inspired:

Keep your motivation levels high with a vision board or a dedicated inspiration corner. Surround yourself with reminders of your goals and achievements.

10. Seek Professional Guidance:

If you’re unsure where to start or want to take your home office to the next level, consider consulting with an interior designer. People often joke that beige is a dull, unimaginative color. That couldn’t be further from the truth! This staple color is a fantastic way to lay the foundation for other shades and prints, or it can be the star of its own minimalist show. Let’s look at how to decorate with beige interestingly and appealingly.

Exploring Color Theory: Why Beige Works

Some may argue that beige is outdated, but it’s quite the opposite. This versatile color works in almost all contexts and styles, making it classic and timeless. Because it’s neutral, it arguably goes with everything! If you’re gunning for a Maximalist style, beige is a fantastic choice to play a supporting role to other brighter saturated colors. Should you be more of a Minimalist, this subtle color can even form the most significant portion of your color palette.

Although beige doesn’t technically exist on the color wheel, it’s still considered a warm color, which means it’s the perfect complement to reds, oranges, and yellows. It still works beautifully as a base color for cooler shades of blue, green, or purple.

Naturally, it also goes with other neutrals like gray, black, and white. Overall, creating a calm and cozy atmosphere is a fantastic choice. Because it’s quite light, it helps a space appear bigger than it is.

Design Styles That Prove Beige Is Best

Because this color is so adaptable, it suits all sorts of interior design aesthetics, from mid-century modern and bohemian to Victorian and Art Deco. Let’s unpack that a little now.

Minimalism

We’ll begin with Minimalism because it’s often used as an umbrella term for a host of other styles, such as contemporary and modern design. As the name suggests, Minimalism (in the visual arts and design) is all about doing more with less. It prioritizes simplicity, and neutral tones, including beige, often characterize it.

Scandinavian

This design style focuses on functionality rather than beauty for its own sake. It emerged in Nordic countries such as Sweden and Finland in the 1950s, and its popularity soon reached all four corners of the globe. Since the Scandi approach values practicality, beige is often used because it matches many patterns and other shades.

Rustic

Rustic encompasses many styles, such as coastal, Tuscan, and cottage. It’s a very down-to-earth aesthetic that highlights natural beauty. You can also consider bohemian (or “boho”) as a rustic look. Beige is inherently earthy (think stone and clay) and treats this style well.

Mid-century modern

People often use this style when they want their homes to have a “retro” feel. It appeared shortly after the end of the Second World War and gained steam during the 1950s (hence the name). You’ll often see beige used in flooring and walls, owing to its potential role as a blank canvas for furniture and other home decor.

Beige From the Windows To the Walls

Off the bat, it’s crucial to bear in mind that beige isn’t a singular shade. Instead, it comes in varying undertones, so be sure to select the right one, as those subtle variations can make a significant difference to your overall palette.

As mentioned earlier, beige is a fantastic base color for your color scheme. You can pair it with dark shades of a cool color like emerald green, plum purple, and peacock blue to create an air of elegance and sophistication. Add warm tones such as crimson red, apricot, or golden yellow to make the space more inviting.

Not the greatest fan of deeper colors? You can also mix beige with bright colors like fuchsia, lime green, electric blue, or cyan. Light tones work better with neon colors, while darker undertones pair best with jewel tones. Spice up beige walls using an accent color on just one wall to create a stunning color combination.

Alternatively, you can incorporate another neutral color like gray, brown, and earthy red to paint a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. If you take that route, include lighter shades such as cream or ivory for a little contrast; otherwise, the room can get a bit dull!

Decorating a Living Room With Beige

While beige can work in any room of the house, it’s particularly well-suited to living rooms because it’s comforting and homely. A lighter beige is excellent for curtains because it complements natural light and makes a room feel airy and open (especially useful if your living room isn’t all that big, to begin with). Using beige paint on walls around areas of exposed brick creates dimension and contrast.

If you don’t want a primarily beige room, consider using just a beige furry rug or throw blanket to add some texture to the space. Using beige around intricate architectural details like a pressed ceiling, beautifully decorated skirting boards, or a bare wooden floor and rafters can help draw attention to them subtly.

Now, let’s talk about furniture. Your couch and coffee table will naturally be the room’s focal point. Dark or black upholstery works wonders for a couch if the rest of the room is relatively light. It’s also a good idea to bring in deeper shades when selecting your coffee table to make it “pop” against the neutral backdrop. Alternatively, beige cane or wicker furniture creates dimension and layers in a room that could otherwise be flat, and a beige sofa pairs well with walls and flooring in non-neutral colors.

We’ve seen a handful of “cores” emerge over the past few years, each detailing a specific aesthetic. The most relevant example is “cottage-core,” a term used to describe a romanticized vision of pastoral life. Think cozy knit blankets, rustic wooden cabins, whitewashed walls with baby blue accents — you get the idea. Cottage-core almost certainly paved the way for a new fashion/lifestyle and interior design trend: Coastal Grandmother.

The coastal grandmother aesthetic is essentially cottage-core meets refined maternal (yet stylish) figure meets holiday home in the Hamptons. Imagine understated luxury specifically designed to capture the essence of the beach and ocean. Picture a woman standing at the edge of a pier at sunrise with a cashmere shawl glamorously yet effortlessly draped around her shoulders. That’s the coastal grandmother aesthetic.

Let’s explore how to incorporate the coastal grandmother style into your home.

Color palette, patterns, and textures

Naturally, you can expect to see a lot of neutral tones (particularly grays, browns, beige, cream, and white), accentuated with pops of blue in all shades, from cobalt to periwinkle. Green also regularly appears in the form of thriving pot plants carefully dotted around the room.

Prints are, of course, subtle and elegant. You won’t find any chaotic or eclectic patterns here, but you will see a lot of paisley, stripes, filigrees, and florals, all strategically distributed across throw pillows, rugs, and linen. As you might expect, patterns are used only as accents and never steal the show.

Blue, cream and white understated patterns are the order of the day.

Lighting

Coastal Grandmother is all about utilizing as much natural light as possible. A large bay or French windows allow sunshine to stream into the home, bouncing off white walls to illuminate the space even more. When using artificial light, you can expect to see a wide variety of lamps casting a warm yellow glow across the room. There’s no harsh fluorescent lighting anywhere here! And, for some (classy) pizazz, you might add an elegant crystal chandelier above the dining table or in the middle of the lounge.

Natural light floods this coastal grandmother dining room.

Decor, furniture, and fixtures

Needless to say, coastal grandmother shies away from sterile tiling (with the exception of the bathroom) and linoleum floors. You’ll see hardwood floors, rafters, and bookcases in all shades of brown and beige. And, because this aesthetic encapsulates taste and comfort, you’ll find plenty of soft, lush carpets and rugs to add warmth to a room.

Couches, no matter where they’re positioned, are plush and inviting. Typically, the upholstery will consist of fabrics like cotton and linen. They’ll usually be white or cream, so be careful with that glass of cabernet sauvignon! Wooden coffee and dining tables are a must, of course. These will also typically be a natural neutral shade, although you might opt for a deep blue to add some color to the space. (Driftwood is a fan favorite). Chairs, too, will be wooden and similarly upholstered to the couch(es), and some wicker furniture never hurts a grandmother. Curtains aren’t heavy, as they complement the natural light flooding the room. This design extends to the patio that overlooks the ocean. Bedrooms are furnished in the same style as lounges. You’ll see either wooden or upholstered headboards and bed frames.

Subtle textures and patterns are peak coastal grandmother.

Now, let’s talk about decor. We must mention that this is the aesthetic for porcelain china vases, lamps, and crockery, as they meet the criteria for the color palette and patterns, and they show off opulence in the most underplayed way. You’ll also see plenty of crystal beyond the chandelier and maybe some blown glass, but it’s never gaudy or screaming “nouveau riche.” Candles, statuettes, and abstract or landscape art will all make an appearance.

As we mentioned earlier, live plants are a staple, and a ceramic bowl of fruit (especially lemons for a pop of color that isn’t overbearing) will do the trick when decorating your tables. Le Creuset and copper pots are peppered around the kitchen. You might even spot a Smeg or vintage-style appliance or two. Light granite or marble countertops (particularly on the kitchen island) are the order of the day in a coastal grandmother kitchen. Anticipate sophisticated tiled floors and walls (usually white or black) in the bathroom. There’ll likely be a freestanding clawfoot tub and marble sinks, too. As with the kitchen, copper faucets are a must-have.

Driftwood frames are the perfect touch to this custom gallery wall.

Coastal Grandmother isn’t reserved for senior citizens! If this sounds like your dream aesthetic, contact Michelle Jett – Decorating Den Interiors to help turn your idyllic vision into reality.

Whether you have a creative streak or not, decorating your home is an exciting venture. It’s a chance to showcase your personality and unique aesthetic. But, more than that, it’s also an opportunity to help protect the environment. How so? The answer is sustainable interior design.

There’s a vast array of decor and design/architectural principles you can implement in your home that appear attractive and pleasant to the eye and benefit the planet! Sustainable interior design is the perfect way to create your dream home while doing your part for the environment. From faucets and light fixtures to windows and walls, there are almost countless means of making your home gorgeous and green. Let’s take a look.

What is sustainable interior design?

In essence, sustainable interior design is an environmentally-conscious architectural and design style that focuses on using materials and construction methods that lessen a building’s environmental impact. In addition, sustainable interior design and architecture are also centered on improving the health and well-being of the people who live, work or play in a green building through its eco-friendly design.

Although sustainable design and green design may seem synonymous, they’re not entirely the same. Green design is all about reducing harm in the present and near future. By contrast, sustainable design looks at long-term consequences. As the name suggests, this design style uses elements that will continue to minimize the negative environmental impact for years, decades, or even centuries to come.

It’s not just about building a structure — it’s also about building a future for the earth’s inhabitants. In a while, we’ll look at the core principles underlying sustainable design and how to incorporate them when designing your home’s interior. But before we get to that, let’s discuss why sustainable interior design is essential.

The importance of sustainable design

We all know that sustainable practices are critical to the planet’s well-being. From using public transport to buying environmentally friendly cleaning products, there are so many important ways we can reduce our impact on the environment. The best place to start as normal, everyday people is with the buildings we create and use. Utilizing sustainable interior design is vital for two main reasons: keeping the environment and us healthy.

The environment’s health

Sustainable design helps preserve our natural habitat by reducing our carbon footprint. Never heard that term? Don’t worry! In a nutshell, it’s the amount of greenhouse gasses we produce. These include carbon dioxide and methane that trap heat in the atmosphere and increase temperatures worldwide. Keeping the global climate stable is essential for preventing natural disasters and allowing us to grow the food we need to survive.

Unfortunately, so much of our garbage ends up in the wilderness and the oceans, which can have terrible consequences for wildlife and the quality of our natural resources like soil and water. Sustainable design also helps reduce the amount of waste we produce, which is critical to preventing pollution.

Our health

Sustainable design keeps us healthy, too! It helps improve indoor air quality. The right materials prevent potentially dangerous toxins and dust particles from floating around the air and making us sick. By purchasing sustainable interior design decor and products, we can also reduce the noise in our living environment, which is all-important for psychological well-being. Using as much natural light as possible (more on this in a bit) can reduce stress and increase productivity, too. This is especially helpful for those of us who work from home!

How to design with sustainability in mind

So, how do you go about actually implementing sustainable interior design? It’s helpful to start with the “five Rs of sustainability,” which are the basic principles that underlie how to live sustainably:

  • Refuse: Say “no” to environmentally unfriendly products by buying only those that are recyclable and ethically produced.
  • Reduce: Use the minimum amount of required materials and resources to minimize your environmental impact.
  • Reuse: Avoid single-use products (especially plastics) by using metal or wooden alternatives wherever possible.
  • Recycle: This one’s pretty self-explanatory. Make an effort to dispose of your trash responsibly by using recycling bins.
  • Repurpose: Utilize your purchases in different ways once they’ve served their original purpose.

The following concepts underpin the main pillars of sustainable interior design:

Energy efficiency

Because most of the world’s electricity is still generated by burning coal, energy is one of the most significant contributors to climate change. Therefore, sustainable interior design aims to reduce energy consumption.

Using energy conserving lighting is a key pillar of sustainable design.

Waste reduction

Our natural resources are limited, and sustainable design seeks to make a little go a long way. It focuses on using the smallest amount of materials to insulate, build and decorate a building.

Maximized space

Making the most of your space goes hand in hand with energy efficiency and waste reduction. This is achieved by consciously and cleverly choosing materials and pieces (particularly furniture) that ensure a little goes a long way.

Water conservation

Although 70% of our planet is covered by water, less than 2% is safe to consume. Sustainable design works to decrease the amount of water we use to preserve this precious resource.

Healthy environment

As mentioned earlier, sustainable design promotes healthy living by making smart choices about temperature regulation, ventilation, and products when designing an interior.

Longevity

Sustainable design is focused on using extremely durable, high-quality materials that last longer. In this way, you lessen your need to toss out old items and buy new ones, which supports waste reduction.

Natural stone is minimally harmful to the environment and can last centuries.

Eco-friendly materials and products

Picking recycled or recyclable materials and products with a low environmental impact is the easiest way to achieve sustainability when designing your interior.

Sustainable design examples

Now that you know why sustainability is so crucial and what it aims to achieve, how can you accomplish sustainable interior design in your home? Here are a few tips and tricks:

To make your home more energy efficient:

  • Maximize the amount of natural light in your home by installing glass sliding doors and even skylights.
  • Opt for compact fluorescent light bulbs, LEDs, and halogens when you do need to use electricity to light a room.
  • Utilize renewable energy sources like solar power if possible.
  • Paint your walls with light colors to help decrease the need for artificial lighting.
  • Use lined draperies, carpets, and blinds to improve insulation and thermal comfort, thereby reducing the amount of energy needed to heat and cool your home.
  • Arrange your furniture in heat and energy-saving configurations by opening up spaces around air vents to improve circulation.
  • Install smart thermostats that heat up or cool down a room based on outside temperatures so you don’t have to do it manually. Some include sensors that switch off heating or cooling entirely when people aren’t in the room.

Utilize as much natural light as possible to reduce the need for electricity.

To reduce waste:

  • Choose linen, furniture, and other decorative items made from recycled waste or materials that can be recycled when they’ve reached the end of their lifespan.
  • Pick products made from materials that are good for the environment. These include:
    • Responsibly produced or reclaimed wood.
    • Sustainably made natural fabrics like cotton, leather, and wool.
    • Low VOC (volatile organic compounds) paint.
    • Recycled plastic, steel, and glass.
    • Hemp.
    • Cork.
    • Straw.
    • Felt.
    • Jute.
    • Natural stone.
  • Purchase adjustable and mobile furniture and modular flooring that can be reassembled and easily moved as necessary. This eliminates the need to buy new pieces.
  • Buy products with easy-to-clean surfaces as they require fewer cleaning products (detergents are often harmful to the environment).
  • Install water-conserving toilets and taps.

To conserve water, consider environmentally friendly fittings such as taps and shower heads.

To buy responsibly:

  • Select wooden pieces that are made from quickly renewable plants such as bamboo or those that have an FSC label on them.
  • Look for locally-produced products. Items produced internationally require long-distance shipping, which pollutes the environment.
  • Shop at antique and secondhand stores. Not only are many of these items rare and charming, but they also minimize the need to produce new goods. Plus, you know they’ll last a long time!

This driftwood table is a great example of using responsibly sourced wood.

As you can see, following sustainable interior design guidelines is actually really simple. All it requires is a tiny bit of care and consideration!
